Historical Background
A scientist named Chevreul is credited with first discovering creatine in red meat in 1835, but it wasn\'t until 1926 that scientists quantified creatine storage and retention in the body.

Where Creatine is Made and Found
• Creatine is synthesized (made) in the liver, pancreas and kidneys.
• Creatine is made from the amino acids Arginine, Glycine and Methionine, then transported to muscle to be stored with phosphate.
• 98% is found in skeletal muscle.
• Creatine is found in red meat (4 grams per kilogram or 2.2 lbs.), or raw fish (10 grams per kilogram).

What Creatine Monohydrate does
It is important to note that creatine ingestion will not increase the maximal force or power an individual can produce, but will improve the ability to maintain performance close to maximal as exercise continues.

Creatine's importance stems from its role in muscle energetics. As creatine phosphate, it serves as the main back-up for ATP, the primary cellular energy form. ATP releases energy when one of three (3) phosphate groups splits off; creatine then supplies a phosphate to what is now ADP, which regenerates the substance back into ATP.

Ways to maximize Creatine uptake into muscle
• Adding simple sugars, which increases insulin.
• Increase the activity of the Sodium-Potassium Pump (pushes creatine into cells).
• Adding cell hydration substances such as amino acids Taurine, Glutamine and Glycine.
• Sub-maximal exercise increases creatine uptake.
• The presence of insulin enhances creatine uptake into muscle as does T3, the active thyroid hormone. A deficiency of vitamin E inhibits the process.

Creatine and the Human Body
The human body can only hold so much creatine. There is a finite amount.
• The Upper limit of creatine storage is about 5 grams per kilogram of muscle (150-160 mmol/kg)
• Formula: BW (Body Weight) - % of Body Fat = Lean Body Mass (LBM)
• LBM / 2.2 = Weight in kilograms
• Weight in kilograms * 5 = Amount of creatine in grams needed for maintenance.
• The human body makes about 2 grams of creatine per day.
• Normal creatine content of muscle is 3.9 grams per kilogram.

Dosage suggestions vary but the two most popular are as follows:

A loading phase followed by a maintenance phase. The loading phase is from day 1 to 5.  A dose of 15-20 grams is used. From day 6 onwards use 5-10 grams per day. 

Taking Creatine with a carbohydrate will increase its absorption rate.  Fruit juices other than citric juices are recommended.   Dextrose is ideal.  Remember it is important to drink plenty of water while using Creatine.
